Changing from one nonimmigrant status to another while remaining in the U.S.
A change of status (for example, from B-2 visitor to F-1 student) is requested on Form I-539 or, for certain work statuses, Form I-129. The applicant must remain in valid status throughout. COS is different from adjustment of status, which leads to a green card.
